What is GED?

The GED® Pathway

The American GED® (General Educational Development) is an internationally recognised high school equivalency qualification and provides an alternative pathway to traditional Matric for learners in South Africa.

The GED® can be a valuable option for students who have struggled within mainstream schooling, have not completed Matric, or are following a home- or alternative-education pathway and are looking towards a recognised high school-level qualification.

A GED® credential can provide access to further education and training opportunities, including colleges, technical institutions and, depending on the institution and admission requirements, certain degree programmes. Where a learner does not meet the direct admission requirements for a degree, a Higher Certificate or other bridging qualification may provide an alternative route into undergraduate study.

The GED® consists of four subject areas:

Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA)

Mathematical Reasoning

Science

Social Studies

Preparing for the GED®

There is no single prescribed curriculum that learners must follow to prepare for the GED® examinations. At Olive Grove, we therefore draw on a range of carefully selected resources, platforms and learning materials to provide a flexible and personalised preparation programme.

Our focus is not simply on completing content, but on helping learners develop the knowledge, skills, confidence and independence needed to approach their GED® examinations successfully.

The GED® is accepted by educational institutions in South Africa and internationally, although admission requirements vary between institutions and programmes. Learners and families are encouraged to confirm the specific requirements of their intended institution or field of study.
